In THE MATRIX, Morpheus offers some sage personal and political advice to Neo and the citizens of our World:
“All I am offering is the truth,” he says, “nothing more.”
Morpheus then offers Neo a choice between between the Blue Pill and the Red Pill and he tells Neo:
“You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.“
The Blue Pill is easy, it will leave us as we are. We simply give control of our thoughts, our well being, and our life to our government. Our life will consist of simple belief, blind faith and unexamined habits that we hold as truth. It will provide you with, security, stability, order, and the comfort of the many things we have been told we will receive from our government if we do not examine much. The blue pill lets us keep our identities and our allegiances with family and friends undisturbed. It permits people to hold stereotypical and prejudicial notions of other people and to act on false claims. It supports sexist and racist ideas and other forms of irrational discriminations and injustices based on uncritical beliefs. It subjects practitioners of the Blue Pill path to victimization by charlatans based on the promise of irrational hope. (Hope and Change). Each individual is absorbed into the collective morrass where the cry for equality is answered by eventual coagulation at the lowest common denominator.
Although they claim otherwise, the Blue Pill path is attractive to those who, at their core, want something for nothing, who’s primary concern is for self over others and for the present over the long term. The result of a Blue Pill choice often proves to be quite the opposite of what was hoped for when the choice was made. We choose this pill if we believe that we do not need truth to live, as the Blue Pill requires nothing of us.
The Red Pill is difficult, but it is all Morpheus has to offer – the truth. The Red Pill requires great risk, personal responsibility, acceptance of personal power, the willingness to allow others their personal power, self-accountability and the terrifying option of failure. The Red Pill is beholden only to the truth. The Red Pill world exists to free those in the Blue Pill world from the self-abdicating, governmental controlled world they have allowed. The Red Pill is the only way to escape from the Matrix. The choice is yours.
Morpheus is asking each of us if we believe that truth is worth pursuing. He then explains:
“This is your last chance, there is no going back.”
Think about that.
Morpheus: I imagine that right now you’re feeling a bit like Alice. Tumbling down the rabbit hole?
Neo: You could say that.
Morpheus: I can see it in your eyes. You have the look of a man who accepts what he sees because he’s expecting to wake up. Ironically, this is not far from the truth. Do you believe in fate, Neo?
Morpheus: Why not?
Neo: ‘Cause I don’t like the idea that I’m not in control of my life.
Morpheus: I know exactly what you mean. Let me tell you why you’re here. You’re here because you know something. What you know, you can’t explain. But you feel it. You felt it your entire life. That there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. Like a splinter in your mind — driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me. Do you know what I’m talking about?
Neo: The Matrix?
Morpheus: Do you want to know what it is?
(Neo nods his head.)
Morpheus: The Matrix is everywhere, it is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window, or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work, or when go to church or when you pay your taxes. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Morpheus: That you are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage, born inside a prison that you cannot smell, taste, or touch. A prison for your mind. (long pause, sighs) Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself. This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back.
(In his left hand, Morpheus shows a blue pill.)
Morpheus: You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. (a red pill is shown in his other hand) You take the red pill and you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes. (Long pause; Neo begins to reach for the red pill) Remember — all I am offering is the truth, nothing more.
(Neo takes the red pill and swallows it with a glass of water)
