Right in the middle of negotiations the employees bought the company I was licensing my invention to. They then sued me for something ridiculous, but didn’t serve me the court papers. I therefore didn’t know I had court, and lost. They started foreclosing on my home and offered me a deal. If I gave them all the rights to my invention, they would give me back my home. They had bitten the wrong dog.
Enter Dennis and Mike, two excellent anti-trust attorneys from a major Seattle law firm. They had the lien on my home released that day and the whole mess straightened out in a couple of weeks. I stopped by several weeks later to thank them and asked for the $20,000 bill I was expecting. “This one’s on us” they said. “We’ll catch you next time.”
That is when I learned how important it is to hire experts (and that there are some really great lawyers out there).
